Rather than directly teaching concepts, the Montessori Method provides a thoughtfully prepared environment that sparks the child’s interest and fosters independent learning with minimal adult intervention. Through years of observation and experimentation, Dr. Montessori developed materials and methods that enable children to explore, discover, and educate themselves.
In 1907, she opened her first school, the Casa dei Bambini (House of Children), in Rome. Her innovative approach revolutionized educational thought by emphasizing respect for the child, freedom of expression, self-directed learning, and the importance of movement and sensory experiences in education.
Dr. Montessori’s work extended globally, including her time in India and Sri Lanka during World War II, where she trained educators and supported the growth of Montessori schools. Over a century later, her principles remain as relevant as ever, with modern research affirming her insights into child development. Today, Montessori programs are implemented in schools worldwide, continuing to shape generations of independent and motivated learners.
Montessori education is grounded in five core areas of learning and is guided by the belief that children are naturally driven by their own needs and desires to learn, rather than by external rewards or punishments.
